The exhibition will be inaugurated in the presence of Her Highness, Princess of Travancore, Gouri Parvathi Bayi  and Mrs. Padma Venkataraman, Social Activist – (Daughter of the former Indian State President) at 5.00pm, 15 February @ Art gallery, Alliance Française de Trivandrum.

The BINDU-ART-SCHOOL uses art to change the lives of people affected by leprosy. By painting pictures and selling them, the students attain financial independence without the discrimination of receiving alms.

By way of a snowball effect, the students of the BINDU-ART-SCHOOL-movement support similarly affected individuals with 30% of their income and, in turn, teach them what they themselves have learned. For the students, this unique process is far removed from a charity-based approach. They are consequently treated with respect and attain dignity. Indeed, their lives become resurrected. The students draw from their own intense life experiences and use unique personal qualities to produce impressive paintings. The simplicity of ideas and the use of space and texture are tinged with the inner beauty of each student.

Although leprosy is a curable disease, social stigma persists. By using a documentary film, a book, and various exhibitions, the artistic quality of humans effected by leprosy and the reality of their lives are brought to the attention of wider audiences. It is hoped that, as a result of this process, people will be inspired to actively participate in an ongoing discussion about society’s material values and how they relate to less materialistic ideas and approaches to living.

The BINDU-ART-SCHOOL was founded by the Austrian Multimedia Artist and Curator Werner Dornik and the Indian Social Activist, Padma Venkataraman (daughter of the former State President R. Venkataraman). Two Schools were opened near Chennai and Sarnath. Exhibitions took place in India, USA, UK, France, Austria, Croatia and Germany. For donations the Bindu-Art-School (www.bindu-art.at) has the 80G tax exemption.

This initiative is also supported by La Gallery 360 and Rotary Club Trivandrum.
