Astad Deboo, pioneer of Indian contemporary dance, collaborates with musician Yukio Tsuji for the premiere performance of Eternal Embrace. This original dance, choreographed and performed by him, is inspired by the poem Maati, written by Sufi poet Hazrat Bulleh Shah. Embodying the poem’s central themes, the piece explores the tensions between annihilation and infinity, the ephemeral and the material worlds. Tsuji’s musical accompaniment on zither, shakuhachi flute, and percussion, is an original work of his, composed specifically for the performance.

bannerASTAD DEBOO : Astad Deboo is an Indian contemporary dancer and choreographer, who employs his training in Indian classical dance forms of Kathak as well as Kathakali to create a dance form that is unique to him, and has become a pioneer of Contemporary dance in India. Throughout his long and illustrious career, he has worked with various prominent performers such as Pina Bausch, Alison Becker Chase and Pink Floyd, to mention a few and performed 72 countries in the World. He has been awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1997 and Padma Shri in 2007, by the Government of India.
YUKIO TSUJI : Composer and performer Yukio Tsuji (shakuhachi, percussion) has collaborated on more than 200 productions over the years. Throughout his career, he has worked with many major theater directors including Estelle Parsons, Ellen Stewart, Jerome Robins, Julie Taymor, Sir Peter Hall, John Dexter, Andre Serban, and Elizabeth Swados. The house composer/musician at La MaMa for over twenty-five years, Yukio performed on Ellen Stewart’s MEDEA, ELECTRA, TROJAN WOMEN, SEVEN and countless other productions since 1980.
