June 1st, 7 pm: Chicken With Plums / Poulet aux prunes

Dir: Marjane Satrapi, Vincent Paronnaud / 2011

Teheran, 1958, since his beloved violin was broken, Nasser Ali Khan, one of the most famous musicians of his time, has lost all taste for music. Finding no instrument worthy enough to replace his violin, he decides he’ll go to bed and wait for death. While hoping for it to come, he drifts into deep reveries as melancholy as they are joyful, which take him back to his youth. They lead him to speak with Azrael, the angel of death, and reveal his children’s’ future. As the pieces of this puzzle fall into place, the shattering secret of his life is revealed: a magnificent love story that nourished his genius and his music.

 

June 2nd, 7 pm: A Better Life/ Une vie meilleure

Yann, a cook and Nadia, a waitress and mother of a 9-year-old boy, decide to risk everything on the purchase of a restaurant. With plenty of talent, energy, love and dreams, but no finance of their own, they find themselves pushed into a jungle of financing and bank loans that quickly overwhelms them. To bail them out, Nadia has to take a job in Canada, while Yann is forced to stay behind to save the restaurant. Together, he and the boy confront a relentless avalanche of creditors, an uncaring system and the daily grind from which there is no respite… until Yann finally understands that his only chance of salvation lies in joining his lover - as well as reuniting mother and child - and following Nadia toCanada and a better life.

Nathalie has everything to be happy. She is young, beautiful, and contentedly married. But then her husband’s accidental death stops her in her tracks. A peculiar love affair then ensues between this highly improbable couple that gives rise to bewilderment and aggressiveness amongst Nathalie’s colleagues. The two will meet in the coldest village in France, but only after Candice has been found dead. The case was closed before it even  pened and the cause of death has been announced as suicide by sleeping pills. The daily grind for the cops of the Police Department’s Juvenile Protection Unit - taking in child molesters, busting underage pickpockets and chewing over relationship issues at lunch; interrogating abusive parents, taking statements from children, confronting the excesses of teen sexuality, enjoying solidarity with colleagues and laughing ncontrollably at the most unthinkable moments. Knowing the worst exists and living with it. How do these cops balance their private lives and the reality they confront every working day? Fred, the group’s hypersensitive wild card, is going to have a hard time facing the scrutiny of Melissa, a photographer on a Ministry of the Interior assignment to document the unit.
